INFORMATION ABOUT CRIBS - WOOD CARVED COLLECTING CRIBS - CRIBS FIGURES
Origin, Development and Spreading of the Crib Tradition
We know next to nothing about the tradition of the Crib's date of origin. Like
almost everything that has its origin amongst the people, the Crib tradition
originally evolved out of several roots. One of these is certainly the large
number of mosaics and paintings surrounding Christ's birth that were created
as far back as the second century, most prominently in the area of Italy. The
theme was also attractive for other Mediterranean countries, however with
representations initially remaining two-dimensional. Not before many years
later, did sculptors show interest in the theme and begin to represent the
group surrounding Christ's birth in form of reliefs most of which featured
extremely large figures. From these, the modern form of the Crib gradually
evolved displaying movable, i.e. individually positionable figures.
Until far into the 16th century, we have no knowledge at all about the
appearance of house cribs. And even then, very little has become known about
their existence. House cribs were originally a privilege limited to the
aristocracy. Only in the 17th century did they become popular tradition. Their
great breakthrough took place 1785, after Emperor Joseph the Second's
anticlerical decrees, which completely forbade Cribs to be put up in churches
or monasteries. By this time, however, the people had already got used to the
religious tradition of crib representations and they no longer wanted to be
without them. Although the Cribs were removed from the church, they were
instantly re-erected in a house or farm next-door. The French and Habsburgian
authorities had not in the least imagined that this would happen
Soon the
church crib figures proved to be far too large for the homes of farmers or
citizens. On top of this, the wish emerged to rather display a larger variety
of figures instead of the original few in order to achieve an image of
Christ's birth that was as detailed as possible and encompassed not only the
Holy Family but also the field with the shepherds and the three Wise Men
approaching from the Orient. In countries offering plenty of forests and a
sufficient supply of wood, the traditional homes of woodcarving, people began
to carve considerably smaller crib figures out of wood also adding colour to
them. As far as the landscape surrounding the figures and the featured parts
of architecture were concerned, a rapid development took place toward the end
of the 18th century with the popularisation of the Crib. Having originally
placed the scene within a landscape that was supposed to have resembled
Bethlehem, many makers of Cribs, decades later, felt the need to show the
biblical event in the traditional costume of their respective homeland. Due to
this desire, highly individualistic Cribs were created featuring very specific
regional peculiarities. Nowadays, there are worldwide associations of Crib
lovers. And in all the places where these associations have established
themselves, the spirit of the Crib will stay alive and new achievements in
handicraft will keep on emerging. All Cribs coming from the workshop "Peter
Staffler - Grödner Holzschnitzer" are collectible Cribs. The parts may be
purchased individually, one after the other. The workshop guarantees for the
continuation of production so that collectors can be assured to be able to
extend their collection with the genuine figures even after years.
